Smoke Testing

Smoke Testing

Smoke testing is a useful tool to visually identify air leakage areas in large domestic and commercial buildings. The test is typically paired with an air tightness test to force the smoke through the leakage areas.

Smoke Testing for Tightness

One of the key advantages of the air tightness test is the opportunity to distinguish areas of air leakage. However, in some dwellings/commercial buildings, there may be areas which can’t be reached and this is when a smoke machine is used.

By keeping the fan in operation and discharging the smoke into suspected areas of leakage, the smoke will be forced out of the building through the leakage points.

This is visible from the outside of the building and will help pinpoint the key areas of air leakage and provide a visual demonstration of how air escapes throughout the gaps of the building.

A smoke machine will normally benefit large commercial buildings however larger houses may also require its use depending on the size, particularly the height of the building.

The smoke testing procedure takes a similar amount of time to complete as an air tightness test, but in more complex buildings such as a school, with many different rooms of varying sizes, it can take longer to isolate leaks.

Our trained and experienced testers will utilise as much smoke as is required to fill a space to sufficiently diagnose the buildings leakage and advise on solutions.
