Smoke Testing

Smoke Testing

In the realm of energy assessment, smoke testing involves a preliminary evaluation to quickly identify potential energy inefficiencies or structural issues in a building, providing a swift overview for more comprehensive assessments.

Smoke Testing for Tightness

One of the key advantages of the air tightness test is the opportunity to distinguish areas of air leakage. However, in some dwellings/commercial buildings, there may be areas which can’t be reached and this is when a smoke machine is used.

By keeping the fan in operation and discharging the smoke into suspected areas of leakage, the smoke will be forced out the building, throughout all the leakage points.

This is visible from outside and will help pinpoint all the key areas of concern and visually describe how air escapes throughout the gaps of the building.

This method is that its quick, easy and none of the smoke residue is left inside the building.

A smoke machine will normally benefit large commercial buildings however larger houses may also require its use depending on the size and type of failure.

The smoke testing procedure takes a similar amount of time to complete as an air tightness test, but in more complex buildings such as a school, with many different rooms of varying sizes, it can take longer to isolate leaks.

Our trained and experienced testers will utilise as much smoke as is required to fill a space to sufficiently diagnose the buildings leakage and advise on solutions.
