Energy & Sustainability Statements Planning Compliance

The National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) (2021) promotes sustainable development. New developments are encouraged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well as identify suitable areas for renewable and low carbon energy sources.

NPPF does not include a methodology on sustainable standards to adopt. These are addressed at regional and local level meaning that each energy statement is unique based upon the location and the nature of the development.

To find out the local planning requirements for your area, please visit local.gov, and browse to your locations planning office.

The objective of an energy statement is to explain to the local planning authority how the development satisfies their sustainable development targets. These commonly include such targets as reducing carbon emissions by a set percentage using renewable energy source for the development or achieving zero carbon.

At Ashby Energy, we produce energy statements for our clients so that the development achieves the targets set by the local planning authority. This is written following the Energy Hierarchy, first outlined in the London Plan  and then submitted for review by the planning authority.

Be Lean: Use Less Energy

  • Being lean is achieved through allowing for natural light to benefit the property to minimise the use of energy and lighting.
  • Using low energy lighting and using building materials that are good at retaining heat.

Be Clean: Supply Energy Efficiently

  • Being clean is achieved through using community heating or combined heat and power.

Be Green: Use Renewable Energy

  • Being green is achieved through the use of renewable/low carbon technology such as photovoltaic cells, solar water heating, wind turbines, ground source heat pumps, air source heat pumps, hydro and/or biomass.
