Display Energy Certificates (DEC)

The Display Energy Certificate (DEC), is a record of the energy usage of a public building and was introduced in response to the EU Performance of Buildings Directive. DECs are to give transparency to the energy efficiency of a public building.

The appearance is very similar to an EPC, as it uses a similar scale for efficiency but is assessed differently and the rating expresses different data.

DECs must be undertaken by accredited energy assessors such as Ashby Energy Assessors Ltd, using approved software and calculation methodologies.

Information Needed:

  • Gross internal floor area
  • Operating hours
  • On site meter readings
  • Records of fuel usage

All public buildings over 250 sq/m require a DEC. This needs to be displayed in a prominent position. In addition to this, an Advisory Report is required in the first year, which lists cost-effective measures to improve the energy rating of the building.

Buildings over 1000 sq/m DECs and Advisory Reports are required to be renewed annually.

Buildings 250-999 sq/m DECs and Advisory Reports are required to be renewed every 10 years.

Avoid penalties for not displaying a DEC by giving us a ring and discussing your options and what is required.
